Haptic Technology: Analyzing Gender - Social Context

Social Context

The perceived appropriateness of a touch depends on the various settings where people touch, such as in public or in private, at work or at home, and in, for example, the US or in China.

For example, geographic location can dictate overall cultural conventions that influence how men and women touch. In a study of three countries, Italian and Czech couples touched each other more than American couples. Czech men initiated more touch than any other group, and in general men touched with their hands more than women, whereas women used other parts of their body, such as the upper arm (Dibiase and Gunnoe, 2004).
